Course Description:

The Post-Construction BMP Inspector Certification course consists of 5 weeks in which participants prepare for their BMP Inspector Certification. Participants discuss important issues and best practices and identify new and changing regulations in the field. This hybrid course includes online and face-to-face components. Online learning activities include self-paced video lectures, discussion forums, quizzes, and other web-based methods of participant-instructor interaction. For the face-to-face component, participants attend a field day engaging in hands-on learning experiences. 

The target audience for this course includes design engineers, stormwater managers, public works staff, commercial landscapers and homeowner associations. 

Course Topics:

Areas to be covered include technical elements of stormwater management practice function and performance, as well as scheduled maintenance tasks that are required to ensure these installed practices are working as intended. Stormwater BMPs to be covered include:

  • wet and dry ponds
  • stormwater wetlands
  • bioretention and infiltration practices
  • manufactured devices
  • underground detention
  • swales and buffers
  • parking lot BMPs
  • permeable materials
  • rainwater harvesting
  • green roofs

Course Requirements:

This program is offered as an online course, followed by an in-person field day, and an online certification exam.  Active participation in the course discussions, quizzes, successful completion of the final exam, and attendance at field day are required for certification. Plan for 1-3 hours per week with some weeks longer than others.

Technical Requirements:

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
