Course Description:

The Living Shorelines course is designed to teach participants all about living shorelines in estuarine environments, and includes information on site assessment, installation materials and methods, and evaluating performance of living shoreline installations. This "hybrid" course combines online learning from self-paced lecture videos, quizzes, and a final exam with face-to-face learning and hands on activities from the field day. Participants will receive an electronic certificate upon successful completion of the online course.

There will be an optional opportunity to participate in an in-person field day in Spring 2025.

 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe what living shorelines are and identify various types of living shorelines suitable for estuarine environments.
  • Discuss the history of living shorelines in South Carolina.
  • Conduct a site assessment to determine if the installation of a living shoreline is suitable at a specific site.
  • Identify the potential environmental risk and responsibility that comes with installing a living shoreline.
  • Understand the permitting process and regulations associated with living shorelines.

Course Topics:

In this course, you will learn about the history of living shorelines in South Carolina, various types of living shorelines and their benefits, how to conduct site assessments for installations, and more for living shorelines in estuarine environments.

Course Requirements:

In order to fully complete this course and receive a certificate, participants must successfully complete all activities in the course. This includes all lecture videos, video quizzes, and the final exam. The time commitment for each module varies, however, you should expect to spend a total of 6-8 hours completing the course.

Technical Requirements:

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
