Course Description:

This introductory to intermediate level course provides concepts, tools, and strategies for course participants to improve their management strategies and make informed decisions about forage and livestock systems production while supporting sustainability and resilience in operations. Modules will include topics on climate-smart strategies to improve forage and animal production and nutrition, soil health, business planning, and direct marketing strategies. We want to share concepts and research-based recommendations with the participants through this course.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss their knowledge of improved management practices to support forage and animal production in operations.
  • Explain how to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions related to animal agriculture by incorporating climate-smart strategies.  
  • List strategies used to improve weed control and nutrient management of forage ecosystems.
  • Expand their knowledge of mental health and farm transition plans for operations.
  • Create a business plan, farm recordkeeping, and a budget to improve profitability. 

Course Topics:

This course focuses on topics related to climate-smart practices for forage and livestock systems. Topics include ecological, social, and economic issues for agricultural systems, which will be addressed in the context of climate change to enhance carbon sequestration, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve soil health and production in operations 

Course Requirements:

There are no prerequisite requirements for this course. If you are an agricultural professional and educator, part-time farmer, new and beginner farmer, or non-agricultural individual wanting to learn more about forage systems, this course is for you!

To receive full credit and a certificate for this course, complete all pre- and post-quizzes and watch all instructional videos.
