Course Description:

This course is designed to be a crash course for prospective strawberry producers looking to sell strawberries commercially (pre-pick or U-pic).  The class will teach participants the fundamentals of strawberry production such as soils, fertility, varieties, pests, and economics of strawberry production. After completing the course, participants should gain enough knowledge to feel comfortable attending regional, statewide, and county-level strawberry production meetings. The base knowledge learned in this course will allow participants to produce a strawberry crop and avoid many common pitfalls of production.  

 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Select proper cultivars of strawberries for production in a given region and client demand.
  • Properly fertilize a strawberry crop using several Clemson University resources such as the Ag Services Lab and Fertigation Calculator.
  • Identify the most common disease and insect pests seen in strawberry production.
  • Estimate yields and calculate profits based on budgeting tools provided in the course modules

Course Requirements:

To successfully complete this course, you are expected to complete the learning activities in all ten content modules.  Learning activities include watching all instructional videos, completing module level knowledge checks, and viewing the additional resources provided.

There are not any pesticide credits associated with this course.

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
