Course Description:
Designed for homeowners, community members, or other interested persons, Pesticide Safety for Homeowners is a self-paced asynchronous video course that offers best practices for handling, applying, and storing pesticides while minimizing risks to people, pets, and the environment. With three course modules, learn to choose the right products, interpret labels, and apply integrated pest management strategies for a safer, healthier home. The course content is supplied with the understanding that no discrimination is intended, and no endorsement of brand names or registered trademarks by the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service is implied, nor is any discrimination intended by exclusion of products or manufacturers not named.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Know how to recognize signal words on pesticide labels.
- Know how to find basic safety information on a pesticide label.
- Understand the difference between restricted use and general use pesticides.
Course Topics:
Divided into three modules, the course covers:
- Using Pesticides – Learn proper handling, application techniques, and storage to minimize risks to your family, pets, and the environment.
- How Pesticides Work – Understand the science behind pesticides, including how they target pests, and learn to use them effectively.
- Different Types of Pesticides – Explore various pesticide categories, their uses, and how to choose the right product for your needs.
Course Requirements:
This asynchronous online course includes 10 instructional videos totaling just over 75 minutes. All modules must be completed by the closing date and time.
Technical Requirements:
To participate fully in this course, you will need:
- An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
- A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
- Access to a high-speed internet connection.
- A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
- Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
- Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
