Course Description:

The Master Tree Farmer (MTF) course is a hybrid course combining online and face-to-face learning. It incorporates self-paced lectures, discussions, quizzes, and other web-based methods of participant-instructor interaction, along with opportunities for hands-on participation activities in the field. The eight-week course builds upon a base knowledge of forestry, and the online modules provide scientific and practical knowledge to manage forested land to enhance timber production as well as ecological, economical, and recreational forest resources. The Master Tree Farmer course brings together experts on a variety of forestry topics into a self-paced curriculum designed for landowners, land managers, and those interested in advancing their knowledge in forested land 

Course Topics:

This course includes seven modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Forestry 
  • Module 2: Harvesting, Marketing and Merchandising 
  • Module 3: Wildlife Management 
  • Module 4: Pine Management 
  • Module 5: Hardwood Management 
  • Module 6: Forest Health
  • Module 7: Timber Tax, Estate Planning and Conservation Easements 

Course Requirements:

To complete the course and earn the Master Tree Farmer certification and digital badge, participants must watch all instructional videos and complete all quizzes before the final day of the course.

Technical Requirements:

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
