Course Description:

Entomology for the Naturalist explores the evolution, natural history, and characteristics of insects. The course focuses on insect groups most encountered in nature with a focus on common South Carolina species, many of which are found across the eastern United States. Investigate insect ecology, symbiosis, pollination, and social behavior to explore how these species interact with each other, and with humans.

Course Requirements:

This is a fully online, asynchronous course. The course is a series of 30 lectures, approximately 30 minutes each, for a total video time of 14.5 hours. Participants must complete 26 of the 30 lectures to earn a certificate. For those that meet this requirement, a certificate is available online. 

Technical Requirements:

To Participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available)
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
