Two Flemish Masters: The Artwork of Jan van Eyck & Peter Paul Rubens

Course Description:

This course consists of two parts of two sections each. In Part 1 we will study the 15th century Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck and his most famous work, the Ghent Altarpiece. In the second segment we will learn about the many thefts, crimes and other misdeeds that have befallen the Altarpiece down through the ages. In Part 2 we will examine several of the works of the 17th century Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens. The course concludes with a virtual tour of Antwerp, Belgium, where Rubens lived and did most of his paintings.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Participants will be able to analyze the Ghent Altarpiece as a monumental and groundbreaking work that expanded the technical and expressive possibilities of oil painting.
• Participants will be able to identify and analyze the stylistic innovations introduced by Peter Paul Rubens and explain their influence on subsequent generations of artists.

Course Topics:

This course explores the artwork and history of Jan van Eyck and Peter Paul Rubens. It also has a virtual tour of the city of Antwerp.

Course Requirements:

This course is intended for participants who have a general appreciation for art, but lack familiarity with the works and styles of van Eyck and Rubens. There are no prerequisites.
