Course Description:

Missional enterprises empower those they serve to lift themselves from poverty to economic and personal freedom. This course will interest those seeking ways to serve economic and social justice, especially as volunteers, investors, or supporters of such enterprises.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discern the realities of poverty in the United States from two contrasting perspectives: that of national data and policy, and that of the individuals trapped poverty.
  • Recognize the underlying causes of poverty.
  • Learn how small, private institutions (the Missional Enterprises) lead individuals to economic and personal freedom through the practice of virtue.
  • Become a street-smart contributor: as a concerned citizen, as a volunteer, as a board member, or as an investor.

  • Prologue - Contrasting Stories of Poverty
  • Module 1: Intergenerational Poverty and the Pathway to Freedom
  • Module 2: The Pathway Forward - Empowering Not Enabling
  • Module 3: The Challenges to Come - Headwinds and Risks

Course Requirements:

Once enrolled, you will have 14 days to complete The Missional Enterprise online course. The course contains 3 video modules with 2 interactive reflection activities.

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

  • An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
  • A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
  • Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
  • Computer skills including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
