Course Description:

In this course, SC teachers will develop a basic working knowledge of aquaponics systems. As aquaponics gains interest as a viable production method, questions from clients may arise about how to grow produce and fish using an aquaponics system. After taking this course, educators will be better prepared to consult with growers about aquaponics as a method of sustainable agriculture.

Registration will open, and participants can begin the course on October 14, 2024. The program will conclude with an in-person workshop in Winter 2025 (Date TBD), at the Clemson Aquaponics Lab in Pendleton, SC.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, Extension personnel will be able to:

Define aquaponics and describe some of its benefits.
Identify characteristics and equipment needed for an effective system.
Describe important processes in an aquaponics system, including filtration and aeration.
Name plants and fish that grow well in an aquaponics system and what nutrients they need.
Identify safe practices for production and harvesting in an aquaponics system.
Name important considerations and resources for growers interested in starting a small aquaponics business.

Course Requirements:

Participants will complete a pre-test, watch instructional videos, and complete a post-test. The self-paced online course will take approximately 3-4 hours to complete and will conclude with the in-person workshop on November 8, 2024.

To participate fully in this course, you will need:

An active email address for the individual participating in the course.
A desktop computer or laptop (recommended): Canvas is available on mobile devices, but some content may appear differently.
Access to a high-speed internet connection.
A web browser compatible with Canvas: Chrome and Firefox are recommended.
Headphones or speakers (closed captioning also available).
Computer skills, including Internet browsing, using email, typing, downloading files, and basic troubleshooting.
